Doctoral Studies

Education on a Research Level The education comprises advanced chemistry courses as well as a thesis work in which the PhD-student performs an individual research project. The fulltime studies extend over four years and lead to the PhD exam.

Research at the Department of Chemistry is of a high international quality, and extends over several different topics including: basic studies of protein folding, syntheses of new antibiotics, as well as the study of interface interactions. A PhD research education project is connected to one of several research groups at the Department of Chemistry, which together form a creative atmosphere (click here to learn more).

Many research projects at the Department of Chemistry are interdisciplinary and at present there are several collaborations between research centres in Umeå, e.g. Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine (UCMM) and Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR).
For information concerning qualifications for education at a research level, kindly use the University page or Handbook for Doctoral Studies.

All positions that are open for PhD studies are announced by the research groups in national and international media. These positions can also be searched here.

In order to ensure high quality of the education at the research level, the PhD-studies of every PhD student are evaluated annually. Moreover, the PhD-students are represented at different levels in the organisation of the Department of Chemistry.
